New Yorker Sandwiches

You guys!! I'm giddy with excitement. Today is the day I've been waiting for for a very long time. Me and my best friend are heading off to the ultimate food lovers' weekend and getaway. We're headed to Portland Feast! A four day, all-inclusive eating and drinking extravaganza with themed events featuring local and nationally acclaimed chefs, it’s an foodie’s dream weekend.

One of the amazing events we are attending is called, get this the Sandwich Invitational. The Sandwich Invitational! I am in. Heaven.

As an ode to the Sandwich Invitational, I found it only fitting to share a recipe for one of my favorite sandwiches: the New Yorker (New Yawkah) sandwich. What's a New Yorker sandwich? Growing up my mom would take me grocery shopping with her which, at the time, I thought was a chore. Fast forward 20 years and now I know why I love grocery shopping so much! What made our grocery shopping trips so fun was treating ourselves to a bite to eat at the end as a reward. The iconic lunch we would share together on our little shopping jaunts was a New Yorker sandwich at our local grocery store deli.

New Yorkers sandwiches rely on a few essential ingredients: rye bread, thousand island dressing, pastrami, Swiss cheese and coleslaw. That's it. Nothing fancy, but somehow when all of these ingredients are paired together they are truly magical. Each layer of flavor plays a very important role, and if one ingredient were missing it wouldn't be the same! From the sour, spicy rye to the peppery, savory pastrami, the sweet and nutty Swiss, tangy thousand island and creamy, crunchy slaw, you can see why this sandwich is one of my all-time favorites.

New Yorker Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • Rye bread

  • Pastrami

  • Swiss Cheese

  • Thousand Island dressing

  • Colelsaw. Can be pre-made from the deli, or you can make a quick slaw yourself. I do something kind of like this:

    • 2 cups coleslaw mix

    • 1/4 cup mayo

    • 1 tablespoon dijon

    • 1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar

    • 1 teaspoon salt

    • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt

    • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions

Spread thousand island dressing on each side of bread. On one half, layer pastrami and swiss cheese. On the other half, spread a nice layer of coleslaw. Top the coleslaw layer with pastrami layer and cut in half. Enjoy!
